I’ve kissed more bottles than boys and honestly a hangover hurts less than a heartbreak. - Unknown

The girl in a glass, ‘Man’s Ruin,’ a good time beckoning and warning. if you’ve been in a tattoo shop you have seen Sailor Jerry designs. Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins is an icon in the tattoo world. He developed his style inspired by Japanese culture combined with the influence of the Navy. He used these elements in an honest and relatable way. This style stood out in its time and continues to stand out.

I have been exposed to Sailor Jerry designs for years, we all have. They say good design is invisible, which explains why I never noticed them before. I was intrigued when she (Man’s Ruin) showed up in a bar bathroom and in the background of a few selfies. The girl in the glass…she’s spontaneous, sparkly, sassy, and she is defiantly having fun! I knew mom needed one for her bar. With a quick google search I found the same sign.

Idea done! Next was color scheme and the how? Color scheme was easy gold and red, close to the original design but a little more sparkle and flare. The how? I had two options print the outline, decoupage and paint or project the image outline and paint. I went with the former. I wanted the background color to show through, so I printed on velum. I used glue to fix the velum to the canvas and used paint on the front to keep the velum from wrinkling. There are still a few wrinkles, but it gave the final piece a pretty cool look and texture.

Every bar should have a girl in a glass. I am working on another girl in a glass for Gurtey’s. At Gurtey’s we want you to feel like the girl in the glass.
